Traffic separation scheme
Seven Stones TSS
Between Land's End and the Isles of Scilly, in Cornwall, the scheme surrounds the Seven Stones reef, marked by a lightship. This is where the oil tanker Torrey Canyon ran aground in 1967: it was the first major oil disaster at sea and led to the first international conventions against pollution from ships. Traffic is monitored by the UK Coastguard. For the fleet it matters when the weather pushes boats north west after the start, looking for better wind before heading south.
Category: Maritime trafficCorridors where merchant ships travel in lanes separated by direction, like on a motorway. During the race they are closed to the boats.
