Traffic separation scheme
Ushant TSS
The TSS at the entrance to the English Channel regulates one of the busiest shipping routes in the world. It was created after the wreck of the oil tanker Amoco Cadiz in 1978, which polluted hundreds of kilometres of the Breton coast. Ships carrying dangerous goods use the lanes furthest from land, under constant watch from CROSS Corsen. For the fleet it is the first big obstacle: it comes just a few hours after the start, when skippers have not yet found their racing rhythm and traffic around them is still heavy.
Category: Maritime trafficCorridors where merchant ships travel in lanes separated by direction, like on a motorway. During the race they are closed to the boats.
